A trivial concept is stretched to the point of its snapping in debutant director Jaideep Varma’s light-hearted comedy ‘Hulla’.
The movie tells the story of a stockbroker Raj Puri ( Sushant Singh ) who can’t sleep at night because the night-watchman in the housing society he’s just moved into keeps blowing whistles well past midnight. Even though Raj’s wife thinks he’s over-reacting, the sleepless share broker takes up the matter with the building’s secretary Janardhan ( Rajat Kapoor ).
Now,Janardhan is a loser in life who’s constantly at the receiving end of his wife’s taunts. As the chairman of the society, he exercises his power and he won’t let any new resident change the way things operate.
Raj’s nightmare only worsens, thanks to his over-noisy neighbours. Gradually his life is thrown out of gear and he is driven to the point of paranoia.
The problem with ‘Hulla’ is that it’s based on a premise that would have suited a short film, not a full-length feature with duration of a little less than two hours. As a result, what happens is things become repetitive in the second half. The story keeps beating about the same bush without coming to the final point. However, you do take some respite from the subdued situational humour that runs through the film.
Rajat Kapoor and Sushant Singh rise above the film’s tacky script to deliver performances that keep you from dozing off. Kartikadevi Rane as Sushant’s wife has a small role which she plays efficiently.
First-time director Jaideep Varma shows audacity in picking a mundane, yet relatable, subject and stretching it to a full-blown story. If only he had built some plot progression in the second half and if only he had gotten rid of unnecessary sub-plots, ‘Hulla’ might have been an entertaining watch.
As it is, the movie’s not really bad. Sitting through it does bring a few smiles. But when you walk out, you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles…
